Come on down and enjoy some chicken every which way and wash it down with Sofie on tap!
Chick-fil-A made headlines last year, but it’s the poultry, not the politics, that we’ve been noticing lately. The humble chicken has evolved from the lazy menu order to the sole reason for a restaurant’s existence.

It was a toss-up between the City Bird sandwich (grilled chicken, pickles, pâté, fried egg) and the Country Bird (fried chicken, Gouda, pimento mayo), both of which layer punchy flavors on top of each other until the sandwiches practically explode.

“Pecking Order”, found just north of historic Wrigley Field, offers up Pilipino chicken prepared in a variety of ways: roasted, fried, or grilled. The chicken is marinated in a family recipe that’s very reminiscent of Pilipino home-cooking.

We were hooked on Pecking Order before it opened: The name, the concept, the chef, the menu…it all sounded irresistible from the get-go, and now we can confirm that it’s well worth a trek to the North Side.

You can get all the fixings of a solid home-cooked meal at Pecking Order (4416 N. Clark St., 773.907.9900), where former Wave exec chef Kristine Subido hooks up diners with dishes from her homeland. Chicken is marinated overnight in a Filipino-styled sauce of tamari, sugar, garlic and bay leaves, then fried, grilled or roasted. The perfect sides to take along include grilled sweet corn, spicy cabbage slaw and sweet plantains. Get a whole chicken with two sides for $23.95.

Budget: Pecking Order
Saying something tastes like chicken usually means it’s kind of boring, but the comparison is a well-deserved compliment at this fowl-happy place. Chicken comes grilled, roasted, or fried, and all renditions are homey and delicious—as far from drive-through nuggets as you can imagine. The masterminds behind this counter-service operation are chef Kristine Subido (Wave) and her mother, Melinda, and they do an impressive job of bringing the flavors of the Philippines to Uptown.
